The Quality Payment Program’s first performance period under MACRA (Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act), legislation will open on January 1, 2017 and will close December 31, 2017. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services predict 88% of Medicare providers will fall under the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System or MIPS beginning as early as January 1, 2017 or as late as October 2, 2017. The data gleaned from the 2017 performance analysis of MIPS providers (Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Clinical Nurse Specialists and Certified Nurse Anesthetists) will undergo payment adjustments based on performance effective January 1, 2019.
MIPS replaces the:
- Electronic Health Record Incentive Program (Meaningful Use)
- Physician Quality Reporting System and the
- Value-Based Payment Modifier
